Explore ways to develop MI through practice, observation, feedback and a personal learning plan.
YOUR WORK. YOUR PRACTICE.
Make room for what matters to someone, whether you are offering support, talking through a choice or finding a way forward together.
Someone may want an answer, a chance to be heard or help thinking through a change. Practice finding out what would be useful and responding in a way that fits your relationship.
When change is the focus, explore the person's own reasons and ideas. When the task is something else, practice listening, sharing information and checking understanding in ways that keep their perspective in the conversation.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented way of talking that helps people explore and strengthen their own motivation for change. Careful listening, shared focus and respect for choice guide the conversation. These skills also help when the immediate task is to understand a concern, explain information or agree what happens next.
BECOMING WITHIN YOUR WORK
Your values and experience shape how you listen, offer help and respond to disagreement. Intentional practice gives you a moment to notice that influence and choose a response that fits the relationship.
A question to carry into practice
What kind of presence do I want to bring, and what would that look like in my next response?

FROM PRACTICE TO YOUR NEXT CONVERSATION
Have a short back-and-forth with a fictional partner. Get specific feedback on your responses, choose something to try next, and return to your saved conversations as you develop.
Notice when your first interpretation changes after you hear more. Choose one question or reflection to try in your next conversation.
